Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal information this website (the "site") collects, how we use it, who we share it with and the choices you have. "We", "us" and "our" refer to the people who run the site.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Your account: your name, email address and password, which we store only in hashed form. If you turn on two-factor authentication or add a passkey, we also store what is needed to check those.
- Comments: what you post, along with the name on your account, which is shown publicly.
- Contact messages: your name, email address and whatever you write to us.
- Author profiles: if you write for us, your bio, which is shown publicly with your name.
Information from payments
If you buy a membership, PayPal processes the payment and sends us details of the subscription: the name and email address on your PayPal account, the plan, the amount, the dates, the status of each payment and transaction identifiers. We never see or store your full card or bank details.
Information collected automatically
- Technical details: your IP address and browser type, which are recorded with your session and in our server logs. We use your IP address to limit abuse, such as repeated contact messages.
- Article views: we keep a simple count of views per article. The count is a total and is not tied to you. While you are signed in or browsing, your session remembers which articles you have opened, so that each is counted once, and that goes when the session ends.
- Cookies: described in our cookie policy.
How we use your information
- To run your account, sign you in and keep it secure.
- To give members access to the articles they have paid for, and to keep payment records.
- To send emails you need, such as address verification, password resets, membership and payment notices and, for authors, updates on articles under review.
- To show your comments, and to moderate them.
- To answer your messages.
- To protect the site from spam, abuse and fraud, and to meet our legal obligations.
Where the law requires a legal basis for this, we rely on performing our contract with you, our legitimate interest in running a safe and useful site, compliance with legal obligations and, where appropriate, your consent.
We do not send marketing newsletters unless you have asked for them, and we do not sell your personal information.
Who we share it with
We share information only as needed to run the site:
- PayPal, to process subscriptions and payments.
- Hosting and email providers, who store the site's data and deliver our email on our behalf.
- YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify and Apple Podcasts, whose players load on articles that include a video or podcast, and so receive your IP address when you open one.
- ESPN, whose servers deliver team logos and player photos where they are shown, and so receive your IP address when your browser loads them.
- Authorities or advisers, when the law requires it, or when it is needed to protect our rights or someone's safety.
- A new owner, if the site is ever sold or transferred, under the same protections as this policy.
Links to news stories, league sites and other websites take you to pages we do not control, each with its own privacy policy.
How long we keep it
- Accounts: until you delete your account or ask us to.
- Comments: until you or a moderator deletes them. If you delete your account, comments you left behind stay on the site, credited to "Former member".
- Contact messages: for as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry and keep a record of it.
- Payment records: for as long as tax and accounting rules require, including the PayPal details above, even after an account is deleted.
Your choices and rights
You can update your details in your account settings, and delete your account there too. Deleting your account erases your name, email address and profile, and you will no longer be able to sign in. If you have a running membership, you will need to cancel it in PayPal first. Payment records are kept, as described above.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to ask for a copy of your information, have it corrected or erased, object to or limit how we use it, or complain to your local data protection authority. To make a request, contact us. We may need to confirm that you are the account holder, and we aim to reply within 30 days.
Security
We protect the site with encrypted connections and encrypted sessions, hash passwords, and offer two-factor authentication and passkeys. No site can promise absolute security, so please use a strong, unique password. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
International visitors
Our service providers may store or process information in other countries, where the rules can differ from those where you live. Where the law requires it, we rely on suitable safeguards for those transfers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the date below, and if a change is significant, we will give you notice on the site or by email.
