Cookie Policy

This policy explains the cookies and similar browser storage this site uses and why. We keep the list short: what we set is there to make the site work, not to follow you around the web.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to keep, so that it can recognize your browser from one page to the next. Browser storage works in a similar way, but the information stays on your device and is not sent with each request.

Cookies we set

  • Session cookie: keeps you signed in as you move around the site and remembers which articles you have already opened, so that a view is counted only once per visit. It is encrypted and expires soon after you stop using the site.
  • Security token (XSRF-TOKEN): protects forms such as sign-in, comments and contact messages from being submitted by other websites.
  • Remember-me cookie: set only if you choose to stay signed in, so that you do not have to sign in again on your next visit.

These cookies are necessary for the site to work, so they cannot be switched off from within the site.

What we store in your browser

  • Appearance: your choice of light or dark mode.
  • Cookie notice: that you have dismissed the cookie notice, if it is shown.

Advertising and analytics

We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not use third-party analytics to track you. The view counts we keep on articles are simple totals and are not tied to a profile of you.

Other companies

Some features involve other companies, whose own policies apply:

  • PayPal: when you subscribe, you complete payment on PayPal's site, where PayPal sets its own cookies.
  • Video and podcast players: where an article includes a video or podcast, your browser loads the player from YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify or Apple Podcasts when you open the article, even if you never press play. These companies receive technical details such as your IP address, and may set their own cookies or similar storage.
  • ESPN: where team logos and player photos are shown, your browser loads the images from ESPN's servers, which receive the kind of technical details any website receives, such as your IP address.

Links to news stories and league sites take you to those sites, where their cookie policies apply.

Your choices

You can block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. If you block the cookies above, you will still be able to read public articles, but signing in, commenting and subscribing will not work.

Changes and questions

If we change what we set, we will update this page. For more on how we handle personal information, read our privacy policy, or contact us with any questions.
