Guidelines for Publishers

These guidelines cover two groups: the editors who publish work on this site, and other publishers, such as blogs, newsletters and media outlets, who would like to quote or republish it.

Publishing on this site

Editors are the last check before an article reaches readers. Before you publish a submission, make sure that:

  • The facts hold up. Names, numbers, dates and quotes are correct, and any reporting from other outlets is credited.
  • The work is original. It has not been published elsewhere, and the author has the right to use any image that comes with it.
  • Injury news is confirmed or clearly labelled. Speculation should be described as speculation, and a player's private medical details have no place in the piece.
  • Conflicts of interest are disclosed. Any connection between the author and a subject should be known before you publish, and declared to readers if it matters.
  • It is presented fairly. The headline matches the article, the sport, section and tags are right, and the image has a description.
  • It is promised to the right readers. Choose whether it is for everyone, signed-in readers or members, and be sure the excerpt stands on its own.

Asking for changes

When a piece is not ready, send it back with notes the author can act on: what needs to change, and why. Be specific and be kind. The author gets your notes by email and can resubmit.

Corrections

Fix factual errors as soon as you find them. If a correction changes the meaning of a piece, add a short note saying what changed. When a published article gets a new web address, make sure the old address redirects to it, so that existing links keep working.

Moderating comments

Apply the community guidelines evenly, including to comments that criticize us. Disagreement is not a reason to remove a comment.

Quoting and republishing our work

We are happy for other publishers to share our work, within these limits.

You may, without asking

  • Quote a short passage, up to about 100 words, with credit to this site and a visible link to the original article.
  • Link to any page on the site.
  • Report on a fact or ranking from one of our articles, credited with a link.

Ask us first

  • Republishing an article in full, or a large part of one.
  • Reproducing member-only articles, rankings or lists, which we do not normally license.
  • Using our rankings or articles in a commercial product, or to train software or an AI model.
  • Using our images. Many belong to others, so we may not be able to grant permission.

If we agree to republication

  • Run the article without changing its meaning, and keep the author's name.
  • State at the top that it first appeared on this site, with a link to the original.
  • Do not suggest that we or our authors endorse your publication or anything it sells.

Requests and complaints

To ask about republishing, partnerships or press enquiries, or to report that something we published is wrong or infringes your rights, send us a message with the details and a link to the article.
